Voith Hydro receives order for Sikkim’s Rongnichu hydro project

Voith Hydro Private Limited, a group company of Germany-based industrial equipment major Voith AG, said that it has received an order from Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited to supply complete plant equipment for Sikkim’s Rongnichu  Hydro-Electric Project. Voith Hydro will supply turbines, generators and electrical and mechanical auxiliaries for the plant.

The company was awarded the order in September 2011, the company stated. With the Commissioning of the project, an additional 96 Mw of clean energy will be available to the national grid. Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited is implementing the Rongnichu Hydro Electric Project, a run-of-the-river scheme on the river Rongnichu near Gangtok in eastern Sikkim, a state in the north-eastern region of India.  Run-of-the-river hydro power plants require considerably smaller water storage, and at times no water storage at all, and does not obstruct the natural flow of the river.

“India has a large and unutilised hydropower potential and the development of such hydro-electric projects like Rongnichu is expected to strengthen the country’s push to become self-reliant to meet the power and energy needs of an expanding economy. The energy generated by the plant will be available to the national grid,” said Amresh Dhawan, MD, Voith Hydro Pvt  Ltd.

Voith will execute a two-bearing Pelton Turbine arrangement for the Rongnichu project. Two Pelton Turbines of 48 Mw each will be installed to generate power from the project. The Pelton runners for Rongnichu will be delivered from Voith’s manufacturing facility at Vadodara.

Hydropower is the biggest, oldest and most reliable source of renewable energy generation all over the world and makes an essential contribution to economic and social development in industrialized countries as well as fast-growing regions. Moreover, it contributes significantly to climate-friendly energy generation. Since the beginnings of hydro power generation, Voith is a leading provider of hydro power technology and pushes its further advancement.
